Egypt Commits to Defensive Military Support for Saudi Arabia Amid Regional Tensions

by admin477351

In a recent statement, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi emphasized that any potential military support Egypt might extend to Saudi Arabia would be limited to defensive operations. This stance comes amid ongoing regional tensions, particularly with increased missile and drone attacks by Houthi forces targeting Saudi Arabia.

El-Sisi underscored that Egypt’s involvement would focus on protecting Saudi territory and ensuring regional stability, without engaging in offensive operations in Yemen. The president highlighted Egypt’s commitment to safeguarding the national security of Arab nations, especially those in the Gulf, which he linked directly to Egypt’s own national interests.

The statement follows a proposal under consideration by the Egyptian Parliament, which would authorize the president to approve defensive military assistance to Saudi Arabia. Deliberation on this measure has been postponed until October 26. According to Egypt’s constitutional framework, deploying armed forces for combat missions abroad necessitates consultation with the National Defense Council and a two-thirds parliamentary majority approval.

El-Sisi also reiterated Egypt’s principles of noninterference in other countries’ internal affairs, the protection of national institutions, and opposition to armed militias. These comments reflect Cairo’s strategic approach to supporting Saudi Arabia’s security while avoiding direct involvement in offensive military actions in Yemen.

The broader regional context includes rising concerns about maritime safety in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial route for international shipping. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty noted that Cairo is working with Red Sea nations to bolster regional security through economic development, logistical coordination, and closer partnerships.

Overall, Egypt’s position aims to reinforce its support for Saudi Arabia and other Arab states while maintaining a focus on defensive strategies to enhance regional stability without escalation into offensive conflicts.
