Saudi Arabia has expressed its approval of a United Nations Security Council statement that condemns the increasing attacks by Houthi forces on the Kingdom. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored its right to defend its territory and citizens as per international law, following these recent escalations.
The Security Council’s statement specifically criticized attacks on King Khalid International Airport on October 10 and 11, which resulted in casualties. Other targets included additional airports and facilities operated by Saudi Aramco. The Council extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged the Houthis to cease military aggression against civilian targets.
In addition to addressing the attacks, the Security Council emphasized the need for adherence to Resolution 2216, established in 2015, and subsequent resolutions. The resolution calls for enhanced international cooperation to prevent the flow of weapons, military equipment, and support to the Houthi forces, urging collaboration with Yemen’s recognized government.
The Council also condemned Houthi threats to commercial shipping in strategic waterways, including the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait. It highlighted the importance of safeguarding vessels and ensuring the safety of international maritime navigation.
Furthermore, the Security Council reiterated its support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government, emphasizing the unity and sovereignty of the country. It also voiced its backing for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg’s diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive political settlement in Yemen.
