EU Warns of Counter-Tariffs: Brussels Ready to Respond if Trump’s 50% Tariff Threat Materializes

by admin477351

The European Union is signaling its readiness to implement counter-tariffs should President Donald Trump follow through on his threat of a 50% import tax on all EU goods. Maroš Šefčovič, the EU trade commissioner, underscored the importance of mutual respect in trade dealings, stating the bloc is prepared to “defend our interests.” Trump’s ultimatum, aimed at accelerating trade talks and addressing a perceived $250 million trade deficit, has been met with widespread disapproval from European politicians. Bernd Lange, head of the EU’s trade committee, explicitly stated that the EU “is strong enough to implement countermeasures, such as counter-tariffs, to offset the economic damage” if negotiations fail. This highlights the EU’s firm resolve to protect its economy amidst escalating trade tensions.
