A trip to the beach can be paradise for a water-loving pet, but sand, sun, and saltwater come with their own set of hazards. A few key preparations will ensure your beach day is safe and fun for your four-legged friend.
Sun and sand safety is paramount. A pet’s skin can burn, especially on their nose and ears, so ask your vet about pet-safe sunscreen. Hot sand can also burn their paw pads, so plan your beach time for cooler mornings or evenings. Always provide a shaded spot for them to rest and plenty of fresh water, as drinking saltwater will make them sick.
Supervise water play closely. Not all dogs are natural swimmers. If it’s their first time, introduce them to the water slowly. Even for strong swimmers, be aware of strong currents and riptides. A dog life vest is a great safety measure. After a swim, rinse them thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt and sand from their coat and skin.
Know the beach rules and be a good citizen. Before you go, confirm that the beach is dog-friendly and check their leash laws. Some beaches may only allow dogs during specific off-season hours. Always clean up after your pet immediately to ensure the beach stays beautiful and welcoming to other furry visitors.
