Saudi Market Alert: Drone Incident Near Mecca Raises Security Costs

by admin477351

The ongoing conflict between Saudi Arabia and Houthi forces has escalated with a recent incident involving the interception of a drone near Mecca. On September 15, Saudi Arabia’s air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Houthi rebels south of the holy city, according to the Saudi-led coalition. The coalition, which has been engaged in a prolonged conflict with the Houthis, emphasized that the security of Mecca and the surrounding areas is of utmost importance.

Turki al-Malki, the spokesperson for the coalition, underscored the significance of protecting the two holy mosques and announced that preventive measures would be implemented to thwart any further attempts by the Houthis to target the region. He noted that this was the second known attempt by the Houthis to target Mecca, referencing a previous ballistic missile incident in 2017.

In response to the Saudi claims, the Houthis have denied any intention to target Mecca. Houthi spokesperson Hazem al-Assad rejected the allegations, stating that the group had not aimed their attacks at the holy city. These denials come amid a backdrop of heightened tensions and increased security alerts across Saudi Arabia as the threat from Houthi forces persists.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), an influential body representing Muslim-majority countries, condemned the reported attack, expressing its support for the protection of Mecca, Medina, and other Islamic holy sites. The OIC’s statement reflects broader international concern over the potential targeting of religiously significant locations.

This incident highlights the continued volatility in the region, where the Saudi-led coalition has been actively engaged in a military campaign against the Houthi movement, which controls large areas of Yemen. As tensions remain high, the security of the holy sites and the safety of pilgrims visiting them remain critical priorities for Saudi Arabia and its allies.
