This comes amid heightened global concerns about virus outbreaks. The country’s health authorities have assured that their surveillance and emergency response systems are primed to safeguard the attendees at this significant religious event. The enhanced precautions follow reports of Ebola outbreaks in some African regions and the rising fear of hantavirus infections worldwide.
To ensure the well-being of incoming pilgrims, travel monitoring and health checks have been made more stringent, particularly for visitors from several nations, including Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Already, many pilgrims have started arriving in Makkah, engaging in visits to crucial religious sites like the Grand Mosque, Jabal Al Nour, and the hills of Safa and Marwa, even before the Hajj officially begins.
Simultaneously, Saudi authorities have bolstered security protocols at airports and along the main pilgrimage routes. This move is in response to escalating regional tensions, especially those involving Iran and Gulf countries, as well as the recent concerns raised by Saudi Arabia regarding potential drone attacks.
In a bid to mitigate the effects of extreme summer heat, officials have expanded shaded walkways and stationed around 34 medical units near major holy sites to offer healthcare support throughout the pilgrimage. These efforts are aimed at ensuring the safety and comfort of worshippers during their spiritual journey.
